One thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the amount of work involved in homeschooling your children.

There are other disadvantages as well. Obviously at least one parent will need to give up working to remain home as the teacher, which means the loss of one income. It's also important that the parent who acts as teacher actually enjoys that type of role. It's no good homeschooling your children if you hate teaching and get frustrated quickly if your child doesn't understand something.

One of the biggest criticisms of homeschooling is the potential for little or not socialization to occur. Children need to spend time mixing with other children, which may not be the case if they're schooled at home. You will need to be prepared to take your children to various external groups, such as church groups, scouts, sporting clubs or other groups that match their interests. This requires time and money, and needs to be budgeted for. Some bigger communities may have a homeschooling group that you can join for regular outings.

The teaching parent can also find the limitations on his or her time quite frustrating. A lot of time needs to be dedicated to homeschooling, which means that other things, such as housework, take second place and may not get done. Always having your children around also makes it more difficult to maintain adult social relationships, as they will need to be taken along on coffee mornings or lunch dates. Also, some adults will find giving up work difficult, and they will miss the adult interaction they are used to enjoying at their workplace.

The issue of money can also become a difficult one. Most public schooling is free, whereas you will need to spend money either on a homeschooling curriculum or on buying various workbooks and supplies. When you've already lost one income, that can be a big problem. There's also the extra cost of outside social activities, field trips and homeschooling groups.

Despite these disadvantages, there's no doubt that many people find that homeschooling is their best choice. If you’re unhappy with traditional schooling methods, then it may be for you. However you need to be prepared to overcome a number of obstacles, and spend time making sure you are prepared to follow through with your choice.
